A Gold Coast mum has shared how she received hundreds of dollars’ worth of groceries for just $50. The price of groceries has been steadily increasing and most Aussie families would be hard-pressed to pay less than $150 at the checkout for one trolley of groceries to last the week, let alone two.

Mum-of-two Rachel Green recently bought an “enormous” parcel full of food for just $50. It was through the Queensland not-for-profit Loaves and Fishes, which offers the hampers along with a discounted grocery store for those in the community.

“I’ve been blown away by how great the value is. Their grocery store has absolutely amazing bargains as well,” Green told Yahoo Finance.

Green shared a video on her social media about the $50 grocery hamper, which offers two trolleys full of items.

It included a range of fruit and vegetables, bakery items like bagels and muffins, a pantry box with canned food, pasta, cereal, a frozen pack with frozen chicken and vegetables, along with staples like milk, bread and toilet paper.

“This would easily last my family of four for over a week, and if you need any other top-ups their grocery store is well stocked and also great value,” Green said.

The 33-year-old shared she had been visiting discount grocery stores for the last few years and found out about Loaves and Fishes through social media.

While she and her husband were always “fairly financially comfortable”, the family started having a harder time when interest rates went up and they were living paycheck to paycheck.

Green shares about her money on her social media account, Aussie Frugal Family. With very strict budgeting and frugal living, the family’s financial situation has been gradually improving.

Charity reports increase in Aussies seeking help

Loaves and Fishes CEO Scott Bourke told Yahoo Finance the charity was providing around 500 hampers each week across its Slacks Creek and Caboolture sites. There is also a site in Toowoomba, which is run separately.

While there is no means test, Bourke said the $50 hampers were designed for families who were struggling, while everyone was welcome to shop at its discount grocery store, which includes fresh and frozen meat, bread, snacks, milk, cheese and pantry items.
