In short:

Australia has only two oil refineries remaining, which supply around 20 per cent of the country’s liquid fuel demand.

John Blackburn, a former deputy chief of the Royal Australian Air Force, says Australia is not meeting its commitments for net imports of oil as a member of the International Energy Agency.

What’s next?

Australia’s remaining refineries are in talks with the federal government to extend the Fuel Security Services Payment beyond 2027.
